The eldest of three children, Marian Hawke spent most her life moving from place to place in order to help keep her father and sister's magical abilities out of notice of the Templars. Even though the three Hawke siblings didn't always see eye-to-eye, their father had always taught them to look out for one another, no matter what.

Eventually, the family settled in Lothering, a small town in southern Ferelden with little Templar presence. For a time, the family was happy, Marian and her father doing what they could for their family while they kept their heads down and their noses clean. However, tragedy struck seven years later, taking Marian's father away from them and leaving her in charge of her mother and two siblings.

When the Blight struck, Marian and her brother Carver took up arms and joined king Cailan's army at the fortress of Ostagar, leaving Bethany to look out for their mother as they left to defend their homeland.

The battle at Ostagar was lost. The king and his army fell as reinforcements failed to show, and the Darkspawn left few survivors in their wake. Hawke and Carver returned to Lothering barely ahead of the Darkspawn horde, prompting the family to pull up stakes once again and flee.
